Domains: SSL / https - Encrypted traffic
|
If you're asking your visitors for critical information, such as credit card info, you must use an encrypted protocol for these pages.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The encrypted protocol ensures that nobody is "sniffing" the information on the route from the visitor to the server.
Ordinary web pages have a URL on the form:
http://example.com
Encrypted pages have a URL on the form:
https://example.com
The "s" is for "secure.
HOW OTHERS DO IT
In order to host encrypted pages you need to have an SSL certificate - which is a set of keys that are used for the encryption and hosted with a trusted third party, such as VeriSign for example.
A VeriSign certificate is expensive, and the current price is $349/year (march 2005).
In addition to this, you would need a dedicated IP for the site, which we do not offer on our hosting plans. If you need to host a certificate on a dedicated IP you will probably be better off with a dedicated server for the site.
HOW WE DO IT
We have registered server wide certificates to protect our customers traffic. All accounts with EchoEchoPlus has this feature from the start.
There's nothing you need to do and nothing to pay.
Just point the encrypted pages to the reservered URL for your sites https traffic.
The SSL protected URL is on the form:
https://echoX.echoechoplus.com/yoursite.com/
(Replace X with the number of your server).
You can lookup the exact link for your domain(s) here:
http://www.echoechoplus.com/newlogin.php
That's it!
